It's smutty, not erotic, and this film is obviously different from that.Į.L.: I definitely made this film with the intention to arouse, because that's what I do. But, in our society, porn has all of these bad connotations most of us, when we close our eyes and think about porn, we see boobs and ass and the tube sites. Some define it as a film showing explicit sex. But no - later on in life, you can have other experiences with new people and evolve, sexually and as human beings.ĪLLURE: This film is part of your sex doc series, but do you also consider it porn?Į.L.: John and Annie don't consider it porn, but porn is difficult to define. When you see people of that age, you tend to assume that they've been together for a long time. She and John met five years ago, so they’re still a new couple, in a way. Also, I love that they both got turned on to this particular form of lovemaking later in life.Į.L.: Yes, after other people dying around them, even. So many of us have these anxieties about our bodies, and I think watching people onscreen who are strong in their sexuality and personality can help us find more confidence.ĪLLURE: We’re living longer lives than ever before, so watching John and Annie gives me hope that my sex life will be long, too. I need to make sure that we’re on the same side and that we have the same values. For me, it's a long process to find the right people. It's only about hard penetration.ĪLLURE: What have been the other hurdles to working with mature actors?Į.L.: The difficulty was finding the right people, but that's always the thing with casting. "Four minutes! Bam! Bam! Bam! Go! Go! Go!" Through the lens of mainstream pornography, sex has become something so aggressive. It’s a powerful approach, especially in this world we live in, where everything is so fast and furious. When we stop doing that, we stop desiring each other, and we stop having this special relationship. It’s really about the importance, for a long-lasting couple, of touching each other every day. John and Annie’s concept of "soul sex" is such a powerful message.

I just wanted to make an honest movie showing two people and their wonderful relationship. Bravo, Hans Canosa for this brilliant film.ALLURE: It’s fetishized because the idea of older women, in this case, having sex is taboo?Į.L.: Exactly. CONVERSATIONS WITH OTHER WOMEN makes you really think about what is important in your personal life and when you finally meet that "special person", hold on to him, or her, for the rest of your life. New York is the perfect location for this film and as the last frame of the film appears before the credits roll, you simply don't want to have this couple leave. When the film begins at a wedding and continues with the momentum of the attraction a couple feel for one another, it is impossible not to think of your own wedding experiences and perhaps the magic of meeting "the right one" as time ticks away in your life. I want to see this film again just to see what I might have missed. And the split screen makes it even more interesting as you get to watch the actors pull off such marvelous performances. The combination of Helena Bonham Carter and the terrific Aaron Eckhart together on the screen with dialog that is out of this world, both funny and sad, at the same time, makes this film an intelligent and smart artistic piece of work. From the moment I saw the trailer for CONVERSATIONS WITH OTHER WOMEN I wanted to see this film.
